Women’s Council’s November Tech Tip

Vlingo

In light of the new Nevada hands-free cell phone law, we decided to bring to you the mother of all hands-free phone apps. Vlingo considers themselves “the future of virtual assistants.” We agree. This app, available for all smart phones, turns your phone into the perfect driving companion. It will read your text messages out loud, take voice commands, even dictate an email. Best of all: it’s FREE.

Las Vegas Women’s Council Tech Tip

October

Alright, you’ve broken down to peer pressure and created accounts on all the important social media sites, now what? That’s easy, you need a report card. Some way to find out if you’re being influential or if anyone is even listening. Solution? Klout.com. Klout takes all your social media site (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, etc) and gives you a score (1-100). This score tells you how influential you are online. Once you set up your social media accounts (it’s a one button set up for most) there’s pretty much nothing else to do. It’s easy and vital if social media is going to be part of your business plan.

#24 Go to a Wine Tasting

While I like wine, I’m not a wine connoisseur. I don’t know how to pair wines with food and picking a bottle to bring as a hostess gift to a dinner party still warrant a panicked phone call to my expert. Even places like Total Wine bring on flop sweats and nervous tics. That’s why a wine tasting had to be on my 30×30 list.

I chose the New Vista Wine Walk. I figure have some wine, donate to charity, and do both in the open air atmosphere of Town Square. It was an interesting experience. A lot of fun and a lot of wine. I had a blast hanging out with friends and learning just a little bit more about this thing called wine.

“Back then the cars had a trap door that we could pull open with a chain to check our tire wear.” – Tim Flock

Yesterday was a happy accident.

I was coming home from teaching my Sunday morning voice lesson, when the bus driver came to a rather abrupt stop. It seems driver was given the day’s detour map – that is every driver but him. As I sat there in the idling bus, stuck  in an incredibly narrow street with a very angry bus driver yelling at dispatch and very angry passengers yelling at the driver, I decided no air conditioning in the world was worth that amount of negativity. So I asked to get off the bus.

Who knew that the detour was the Henderson Super Run Car Show? I had a blast walking on Water Street in Downtown Henderson, looking at all the cars and exploring the random vendor booth. It reminded my a little of Hot August Nights. There were all these great cars, some in really amazing condition. I had fun doing something out of the ordinary.

The City of Henderson has special events throughout the year. Check out their events page for more information.

This weekend, I was once again reminded that Vegas isn’t just The Strip. Apparently we have car shows too.

#26 Dance in the Rain

My cool rain boots! (Yes, I know the pants go inside, this way was cuter)

This is Las Vegas where the sun shines at least 335 days out of the year. Rain is a unique and note worthy experience here. Natives tend to go insane with excitement over even the smallest drop. I enjoy the rain, but it’s rare for me to actually take the time to stop what I’m doing and go play. (Hence the reason it’s on my list) Well, today it rained and instead of thinking about the 10 pages of stuff on my to do list and the hundreds of emails waiting for something, I decided to take 20 minutes to just play.

I didn’t have to go very far. I live in the middle of town where the streets are a bit older and very good for attracting puddles. I also live in a neighborhood where there are a ton of kids who are home schooled. Put those two things together and it’s the prefect recipe for a fun-filled dance in the rain. We splashed, kicked, and boogied down. It was the absolute best way to recharge my batteries and of course, dance in the rain.

Google Places

You’ve seen this red marker before. If you own a Google friendly Android, it may even be a pre-installed app on your phone. What is it? It’s the 21st centuries answer to the antiquated phone book. Make your business be known, make it a Google Place. It’s easy. Go to google places and follow the easy steps up setting up your business listing. Then Google will mail you confirmation (to make sure you’re real). Once you get the postcard in the mail, finish the validation process and you have a Google Maps friendly place of business. Oh and did we mention it’s FREE?
